What to Do & Expect at Understory

Parking & Check-In

Parking is in the pasture generously made available by our neighbors. You’ll be greeted by a parking helper to guide you. After parking, make your way to the Information Station at the Big Cabin, where you'll receive:

Welcome Packet
Campsite assignment
Event map
Activity sign-up information

We'll have several wheelbarrows available to help transport your gear to camp. Once you've unloaded, please return them so the next arrivals can use them.

Camping

Everyone will receive a numbered campsite we’ve picked especially for you. Folks should plan on bringing all the usual camping stuff. We will try our best to prep your camping spot but folks should not expect a super perfect manicured spot so definitely bring the good sleeping pad if you have it. Here is the list of general camping supplies.

What to Bring

Camping

Mess kits (we would love to avoid paper plate waste as much as possible). There will be an outdoor sink for washing.
Tent
Sleeping bag
Sleeping pad
Camp chair (you might want to move these around to various hang out spots and for sitting to enjoy meals)
Lantern or flashlight
Cooler (for personal food and drinks)
Camp stove if you'd like one

Clothing

Walking shoes or boots
Layers for warm afternoons and cool evenings
Swimsuit and towel for the kiddie pool lounge
Festive attire...whatever that means to you

Don't Forget

Bug spray
Sunscreen
Hat
Earplugs (if you're a light sleeper)
Refillable water bottle
Lunch, snacks, and any beverages you'd like throughout Saturday

Food & Drink

We'll be providing:

Beer (while it lasts) so BYOB if you want to be sure you have plenty.
Sparkling water (while supplies last)
Saturday community dinner featuring a hearty main dish (vegetarian options as well), fresh bread, and seasonal greens
Coffee and a light breakfast Sunday morning
Potable well water

If you have dietary restrictions, allergies, or specific food preferences, please bring your own meals or supplemental food.

We'll begin serving dinner around 5:30 PM. We'll wrap up around noon on Sunday. If you'd like to linger into the afternoon, you're welcome to bring your own Sunday lunch.

Safety & Forest Guidelines

The Understory exists because we're fortunate to share this landscape with our neighbors and the wildlife that calls it home.

Leave pets at home so we don't disturb local wildlife and because neighbors have dogs, they rarely venture over to our place, but we can’t vouch for their character.
Stay within the event boundaries shown on your map.
Drive slowly and respectfully, try not to kick up dust.
Pack out your garbage.
Store food securely overnight to prevent curious critters, large and small.
Help protect the forest understory by staying on established paths whenever possible.
Feel free to admire mushrooms but DO NOT EAT.
If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs-this will be a party and we aren’t limiting the hootin’ and a hollerin’.

One last thing. Country life has its own soundtrack. Depending on the day, you may hear chainsaws, tractors, barking dogs or even "target practice" and skeet shooting from neighboring properties. Don't be alarmed. It's simply part of life out here.
