The Story of This Place

We're grateful for the chance to share a place that has meant so much to our family and to welcome old friends and new into the experience we call the Understory.

The Understory takes place on our family land in Day Creek, just outside Sedro Woolley, Washington. It's a place shaped over five decades by family, friends, hard work, and a belief in making something meaningful from what we can find or what we already have.

In December 1973, our parents, Steve and Joyce Keene, together with our Uncle Clyde and Aunt Janis, purchased this land. For most of those years, it remained a place we kept close, shared primarily with family and friends. Only recently have we felt inspired to invite a wider community into it.

Like us, our children have grown up on these trails, climbed the same trees, and discovered the same sense of wonder that first drew us here decades ago.

The Understory grew from a simple idea: to share this place with the people we love. Our hope is that, for one weekend each summer, the forest becomes a place where music, art, food, conversation, and community gather beneath the cedars.
